I personally enjoy all the benefits to yoga. It's a nice balance on the off days when I'm not training. I first started ashtanga yoga about 1yrs ago through a class. I liked the instructor, so started making it a habit. She's been practicing various forms of yoga for 8 years and her frame is very petite and muscular, built like a ballerina. Nice, I'd like to eventually get to the same build. She was still doing yoga during her pregnancy and post pregnancy - she went back to her pliable physique in less than 5 weeks.
when I first went for yoga, I found it gave me subtle definition on my arms and legs in just a few short weeks, but I don't think this would be a pointer for losing fat directly. Indirectly maybe, as you think of any constant fluid movement will burn calories/fat. I don't think yoga is a negative in any way but for ultimate fat loss, I understand now that nutrition is 80-something % of one's success. I'm trying to achieve some visible muscle gain but mostly my aim is to get lean. I use yoga to serve as an enhancer on days I don't lift/run so as to keep my muscles conditioned. I also like yoga because it relaxes my tension. Just remember, the more active muscle tissue you build, such as lifting or resistance training, the more you raise your BMR on the whole.
